Notes on playing safely

Dogs just love to catch things! play safe

But beware of injuries. Jumping up with all four feet into the air, twisting to catch a floating flying disc and landing on 2 legs can be very dangerous for overweight dogs, larger breeds and 'weekend warrior' dogs. The 'disc dogs' you see on TV and at events are well conditioned professional doggy athletes...and they regularly sustain injuries.

Cruciate ligament rupture in dogs
This is a serious and fairly common injury often caused by dogs jumping up into the air to catch floating discs, and can require surgery.
When playing fetch throw for distance - the aim is cardio exercise. That means the disc hits the ground before your dog gets to it.

When playing catch, play with your dog standing 5 -15 ft away and throw to him. Your dog should always have his 2 back feet on the ground when he catches the chewber.
Regular safe exercise is vital in maintaining your dogs joint and muscular health
....but don't overdo it.
